When a Filling Is Needed
Cavities are among the most common dental problems. Often, cavities can cause pain, sensitivity to hot or cold foods, and may irritate the teeth and gums near the affected tooth. If you have tooth pain, discomfort when eating or drinking or when brushing and flossing, you may have a cavity. Since dental fillings work best when decay is caught early, don’t hesitate to call for an appointment.
In some cases, the patient may not experience any pain or symptoms of a problem. These cavities are often only discovered during routine dental exams or on x-rays. Even if you don’t know you have a cavity, the decay can still spread. Keeping up with regular dental exams allows us to detect cavities in the earliest stages of development when the treatment is most effective.

Types of Dental Fillings
There are two main types of materials used for fillings: amalgam and composite fillings. Amalgam fillings are made of a combination of metals, such as silver, tin, and mercury. These fillings are durable and have been used for more than a century. However, the metal color is unattractive when used on teeth that are visible when smiling. Composite fillings are made with a mixture of plastic and glass to create a tooth-colored resin.
Composite fillings are preferred for:
- Filling cavities on visible teeth and the front of the teeth
- The color that matches the natural teeth
- Less drilling during the procedure
- Bonding well to existing teeth
- Fixing other problems, such as chips or cracks
- Less tooth sensitivity
Although composite fillings are very popular, they are not the right choice for every situation. We examine your affected tooth to determine the size of the cavity and where it is located. Composite is not always the best choice for large fillings. Our dentist will select the best filling material to restore the function of the tooth and prevent further decay.
The Filling Procedure
The process for Fort Lauderdale fillings starts with removing the decay from the tooth to prevent additional damage. The tooth is then cleaned and the filling material is placed in the space that was damaged by tooth decay. The filling is molded to match the natural shape of the tooth and allowed to harden.
Our patients are always treated with the highest standard of quality patient care throughout the entire process. We are a multilingual dental practice with the ability to communicate with our patients in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. This allows us to provide every patient with personal attention and better meet the needs of the individual.
Contact our office at (954) 800-6565 for more information and to arrange an appointment for an exam and dental fillings.
