Reasons to Extract a Tooth
A tooth may need to be extracted for a number of reasons. In some cases, a badly decayed, broken, or infected tooth cannot be saved and must be removed. For some patients, one or more teeth may need to be removed to correct crowding during orthodontic treatment.
We perform tooth extractions for teeth that are:
- Broken
- Severely decayed
- Compromised due to periodontal disease
- Impacted
- Infected
- Crowded
Our goal is always to preserve and maintain your oral health. When a tooth is badly damaged or compromised, removing the tooth is actually the best way to restore your dental health. When re-establishing your oral health requires tooth extractions in Fort Lauderdale, we offer the best quality care for our patients in a well-equipped, comfortable spa-like atmosphere.

The Tooth Extraction Procedure
Although the idea of having a tooth extracted can create tremendous anxiety, it is actually a relatively simple procedure. We start with an examination and x-ray to determine the position of the tooth roots and the condition of the tooth and surrounding tissues. An anesthetic is applied to numb the tooth and surrounding tissue to reduce pain during the extraction
Once you have been numbed, the dentist uses special tools to loosen the tooth from the surrounding ligaments and gum tissue. After the tooth has been extracted, we check the bone to ensure nothing else is damaged and cover the empty socket with sterile gauze. Gentle pressure is used to control the bleeding, although small sutures may be used in some cases.
Caring for Your Mouth After Extraction
Proper home care after a Fort Lauderdale tooth extraction can help ensure that the site heals correctly. You may be advised to take ibuprofen or another over-the-counter pain reliever for any discomfort after the procedure and an antibiotic may be prescribed. Ice can be used to relieve any swelling or discomfort. You should stick to softer foods until your mouth is healed, which usually takes just a few days.
Most patients heal easily and return to normal in no more than a few days after having a tooth extracted. However, if you experience extreme pain or bleeding after the procedure, you should call the dentist for advice. After the extraction is complete and the area is healed, we can discuss options for replacement teeth, such as dental implants or bridges.
If you have a tooth that is badly damaged or causing pain, please call (954) 800-6565 to schedule an appointment.
